Motorola Equipment to Complete Link to Connect Earth and Space Station

Wednesday November 29 by Staff Writer
The November 30th shuttle launch will carry Motorola's S-Band telemetry and control transponders. Early next year, high data rate equipment from Motorola will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS). Sometime in 2001, this equipment will be the first to allow the transfer of High Definition TV (HDTV) images from space.

The high data rate equipment will operate on the Ku-Band and will allow the transfer of scientific data and video from the ISS to earthbound researchers. In many cases, this will speed up research by not having to return all research to Earth for analysis before running another experiment. This method of study is called telescience.

One area in which high speed communications are expected to speed experiments is in drug design. Weightlessness allows protein crystals to form in higher-quality, three-d structures than they would on Earth. Viewing these crystals as they are growing in space is expected to increase knowledge of the structures. In turn, this may lead to the development of new drugs.
